Once in a lifetime experience that has
widened horizons
Since last Wednesday 28 students from Great
Wyrley High School and their families have been playing
host to students from the Albert Schweizer Gymnasium in Marl,
Germany.
After
an official welcome during which the guests were presented with
school sweatshirts (courtesy of the Great Wyrley Association)
school organisers and pens, and their hosts received mementos
of Marl, the guests got down to Maths and English lessons with
their partners.
The English and German youngsters have also been collaborating
to produce a book of memories and a joint webpage and have even
written and recorded a theme song for the visit.
Other highlights of the trip include an Anglo-German sports
challenge, a Drama workshop, an evening of bowling and a joint
excursion to Alton Towers.
After a weekend visiting local attractions and experiencing
everyday English life in their host families the young people
have been trying their hand at teaching Great Wyrley students
more about Marl, the surrounding area and the German school
system.
Headteacher
Mr C Leach, speaking at an assembly held to make the students
honorary members of Great Wyrley High School, pointed out that
the word exchange meant to give something and receive something
else in return and encouraged all the young people to celebrate
their differences as they built new friendships. He thanked
the Marl students for the memories we had so far and looked
forward to the return visit in April 2005.
Frau Elke Freeman, the party leader, expressed her gratitude
for the warm welcome afforded by everyone in Great Wyrley and
described the visit as “a once in a lifetime experience
that has widened horizons, enabling us to see what binds us
to, rather than divides us from our new friends”.
