Christmas
in Scotland is very much a family time. A time where differences are set aside
and all arguments are forgotten.
The main day is the 25th, the morning of which has super-charged little children
(and me) jumping on their parents beds in the early hours of the morning, desperate
to open the presents they lay awake at night thinking about.
After all the gifts from under the tree have been traded, the Christmas dinner
is prepared. If the family is religious they may go to church in the morning,
or they might have been to a midnight service the night before.
At some point in the day, Queen Elizabeth will make her annual speech in which
she reviews the year and address her hopes for the next.
It’s the unofficial tradition of a British Christmas to eat as much as
you possibly can and generally make a pig of yourself. There is always a lot
of food and people will not take ‘no’ for an answer when they offer
it! The night before Christmas is known as Christmas Eve. Stockings are hung
above the fireplace (to be filled with smaller presents) and food and drink
is set out for Santa and his reindeer.
