Christmas is the time of the year when the whole family comes
together.Already early in December, my family starts with the preparations for
Christmas. Christmas decorations get pulled out from the attic and my dad hangs
up all the little lights in the trees
in our front yard. As soon as it is getting darker outside, all the neighbors
also turn their lights on so that the street appears to be shiny and bright.
By this time, all the shopping malls are crowded with people buying Christmas
gifts and little kids, sitting on Santa’s lap and telling him what they
would like to have for Christmas.
We usually get our Christmas tree at least one week before Christmas.
It is always a big event and the whole family is going to choose the “right”
tree. Once we have decided after long discussions, my dad chops it down and
we take it home in our car. Decorating our Christmas tree has its own tradition.
After my dad placed the tree in our living room, my mom starts hanging up the
lights in form of artificial candles. Me and my siblings are watching her and
can hardly wait until we are allowed to hang up all the other decorations like
candy canes, glass-icicles or balls in different colors and designs. While we
are all decorating, Christmas music is playing in the background and songs like
“Frosty the snowman”, “Beginning to look a lot like Christmas”,
and “Rudolph the red nosed reindeer” creating the right atmosphere.
On Christmas Eve the excitement is getting more intensive. We
usually come together with my aunts, uncles, and cousins at my grandmother’s
house and spend the afternoon and evening there. When the whole family is together,
there is of course lots of talking, laughing, and sometimes
even singing. My grandma is fixing a dinner and the children can watch TV or
play games. When we come home at around 11pm, we put a plate with cookies and
a glass of milk for Santa next to the Christmas tree in the living room. After
that, we go to bed and hope to fall asleep as soon as possible. On the next
day, I usually wake up very early. All the presents are lying under the tree
and waiting to get unwrapped. This is usually the most exciting part of Christmas
and me and my siblings enjoy this moment very much, so that we don’t rush
through all the gifts and unwrap them slowly. When all the presents are opened,
we normally have breakfast and my mom starts the preparations for the Christmas
dinner. Traditionally, my family has a big turkey dinner on Christmas Day and
the turkey needs to be in the oven for approximately five hours. We spend the
rest of the day watching TV and playing with our Christmas presents. My parents
usually don’t go to bed too late because the 26th is unfortunately a working
day again.
